Giacchino is great at tunesmithing one melody that he uses widely during a score, think about the theme to Up or the Enterprise theme from the first new Star Trek. Much of the flute writing in R1 reminded me of Indiana Jones / Holy Grail. Listen also for low(ish) trumpet doubling French horn in many of the exciting moments, a trick Williams learned from Mahler and uses to great effect. Also like Williams, Giacchino went full Richard Strauss with melody and overall texture during one of the flying scenes, can't remember which offhand.īut flying scenes are something Williams does better than anyone - think about Harry Potter flying Buckbeak in Prisoner of Azkeban, about the Asteroid Field in ESB, the sky bound scenes in Hook - you don't need the visuals to know that we're flying in those and nobody else to my mind comes close.
